AMBIENT MUSIC

The concept of music designed specifically as a background feature in the environment was pioneered by Muzak Inc. in the fifties, and has since come to be known generically by the term Muzak. The connotations that this term carries are those particularly associated with the kind of material that Muzak Inc. produces - familiar tunes arranged and orchestrated in a lightweight and derivative manner. Understandably, this has led most discerning listeners (and most composers) to dismiss entirely the concept of environmental music as an idea worthy of attention.

Over the past three years, I have become interested in the use of music as ambience, and have come to believe that it is possible to produce material that can be used thus without being in any way compromised. To create a distinction between my own experiments in this area and the products of the various purveyors of canned music, I have begun using the term Ambient Music.

An ambience is defined as an atmosphere, or a surrounding influence: a tint. My intention is to produce original pieces ostensibly (but not exclusively) for particular times and situations with a view to building up a small but versatile catalogue of environmental music suited to a wide variety of moods and atmospheres.

Whereas the extant canned music companies proceed from the basis of regularizing environments by blanketing their acoustic and atmospheric idiosyncracies, Ambient Music is intended to enhance these. Whereas conventional background music is produced by stripping away all sense of doubt and uncertainty (and thus all genuine interest) from the music, Ambient Music retains these qualities. And whereas their intention is to `brighten' the environment by adding stimulus to it (thus supposedly alleviating the tedium of routine tasks and levelling out the natural ups and downs of the body rhythms) Ambient Music is intended to induce calm and a space to think.

Ambient Music must be able to accomodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.

L'ambient est un genre de musique électronique dont les limites sont difficiles à définir.

Le terme, inventé par Brian Eno, faisait au départ référence à la vocation du genre à constituer une musique d'ambiance ou, plus précisément, une musique "de fond" (Eno avait justement composé un premier album d'ambient intitulé Music For Airports). Par la suite, c'est plus la prédominance des nappes et l'absence de beat qui ont servi à définir le genre.

Le terme reste cependant profondément ancré dans le contexte de la musique planante des années 1970 : Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Ash Ra Tempel, Heldon, Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Pink Floyd, mais aussi de la musique classique minimaliste (Steve Reich, Philip Glass notamment, voire Erik Satie ou David Aubrun).

Bien que les sous-genres tendent à se confondre au point que l'on parle génériquement de Downtempo (tempo lent) ou d'Electronica, on peut différencier dans l'ambient quelques esthétiques à peu près homogènes :

• ambient house : à rapprocher selon les morceaux de la progressive house : The Orb, Orbital, KLF...
• ambient techno : représentée par certains artistes du label Warp Records comme Boards of Canada, et par les Ambient Works d'Aphex Twin.
• ambient à dominante bruitiste, qui peut flirter avec la techno minimale et l'electronica: Monolake, Autechre, Porter Ricks...
• ambient minimaliste : nappes ambient avec séquences répétitives: certaines œuvres de Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Oophoi, Brian Eno...
• heavenly voices (ou musique féerique) : Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins...
• illbient
• indus-ambient (ou dark ambient, sombient, etc.) : Scorn, Sielwolf, In Slaughter Natives, Biosphere, Lustmord, Dive, Coil...
• musique planante (ou space music) : certains albums de Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze...
• muzak
• pop ambient : introduction de sons ambient dans des chansons du répertoire pop de certains groupes comme The Cure, Depeche Mode, Mercury Rev... Pop Ambient est par ailleurs le nom d'une série de compilations du label allemand Kompakt.
• post-rock planant: Labradford, les canadiens Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Pan-American...
• tribal ambient : mélange de nappes ambient avec des percussions provenant de diverses ethnies : Steve Roach, Max Corbacho, Kelly David, Robert Rich, Na-Koja-Abad, Alio Die...
• trip-hop et dub peuvent être considérés comme profondément marqués par l'ambient : Archive, Deadbeat, Massive Attack, Portishead, Kid Loco...
